Criteria for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early gastric cancer (EGC) have expanded, as reflected in Japanese guidelines. Data comparing outcomes after ESD versus surgery in these patients are limited.
Investigators in Japan retrospectively reviewed outcomes in patients with differentiated-type EGC who met expanded-indication criteria for curative ESD in a single center. They compared outcomes in 181 patients treated with ESD and 127 with surgery. They also compared outcomes in a propensity-matched subset of these groups comprising 74 matched pairs.
