In the U.S., in vitro fertilization (IVF) is beset with high rates of multiple pregnancies (mostly twins) due to the common practice of transferring ≥2 embryos per cycle. Investigators analyzed CDC data for IVF cycles initiated during 2013 to test the hypothesis that clinics with higher rates of elective single embryo transfer (eSET) would have lower incidence of multiple births while maintaining high pregnancy rates.
The clinic-level analysis was focused on eSET for all fresh autologous cycles in two age ranges of patients (aged <35 and 35–37). Most clinics performed eSET in 0%–9% of cycles (47% of clinics for women aged <35; 74% for women aged 35–37). Clinics with higher eSET rates also had higher rates of blastocyst embryo transfers (i.e.…
