Mumps is a febrile disease associated with parotitis and swelling of other salivary glands and is occasionally accompanied by aseptic meningitis and orchitis. It was a common childhood illness before the development of a vaccine, which is routinely administered as part of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) inoculation in two doses, one at 12 to 15 months of age and the second at 4 to 6 years.
Despite the initial high efficacy of the vaccine, which led to the development of herd immunity and an almost complete disappearance of mumps in children, numerous large outbreaks have been reported in young adults, most of whom have records of either partial or complete vaccination.
