Patients with schizophrenia are reportedly 3.6 times more likely to experience childhood adversity than the general population and manifest higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Schizophrenia patients struggling with PTSD show greater social and occupational functional impairments than those without PTSD; however, frequent substance-use, cognitive, and other psychiatric comorbidities complicate our understanding of the contribution of PTSD per se to interpersonal and occupational impairments. Now, investigators have examined these possible effects of PTSD symptoms by analyzing previously collected data on outpatients with schizophrenia.
