Subdermal implants provide up to 4 years of highly effective contraception and are safe for breast-feeding mothers (NEJM JW Womens Health Jul 2011 and Obstet Gynecol 2011; 117:1114). However, some health systems balk at the cost of implants. To assess duration of use of postpartum implants placed prior to hospital discharge compared with those placed in outpatient settings, investigators in South Carolina reviewed medical records of 776 women who received implants at a single academic medical center.
