Neurofibrillary tau (NFT) tangles are both a key hallmark of Alzheimer disease (AD) and a common finding in the brains of nondemented older people. The mesial temporal cortex is the most common area where NFTs are found in the aging population and is believed to be the area where AD-related NFT pathology begins before spreading in a stereotypical fashion (Neurobiol Aging 1995; 16:271).
