Dyspareunia is common among postpartum women. To identify risk factors for dyspareunia within the first month after childbirth, researchers interviewed 2748 first-time mothers who had resumed sexual intercourse within 6 months postpartum. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate the effects of patient characteristics, obstetric and psychosocial factors, and breast-feeding on dyspareunia.
Mothers who reported fatigue all or most of the time at 1 month were more likely to report dyspareunia at 6 months (28% vs. 18%; P=0.001). Dyspareunia was also more common among mothers who reported feeling more stressed at 1 month postpartum.
