Multiple methods have been used to aid endoscopic identification of gastric intestinal metaplasia (IM). One method used for many years in assessing cervical tissue is acetic acid chromoendoscopy (AAC), in which the acetowhite reaction of columnar epithelium to acetic acid produces a white appearance of the columnar epithelium of IM. To assess AAC's accuracy in diagnosing gastric IM, investigators in Korea prospectively evaluated patients presenting for screening endoscopy.
The gastric mucosa was sprayed with 10 mL of 1.5% acetic acid in the antrum and angularis and areas where the acetowhite reaction was noted. The extent of IM was determined using conventional endoscopy and AAC. This was repeated in the body of the stomach. Targeted biopsy …
