Compared with abdominal hysterectomy, vaginal and laparoscopic approaches are associated with fewer complications and faster return to full activities; thus, surgeons have prioritized these minimally invasive approaches. In November 2014, the FDA recommended against use of electric power morcellation during laparoscopic hysterectomy in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women with suspected fibroids to minimize risk for inadvertent dissemination of occult uterine cancer. To characterize trends in hysterectomy before and after the FDA advisory, investigators searched the Perspective database for clinical approaches to hysterectomy in 203,520 women from the first quarter of 2013 (Q1-2013) through the first quarter of 2015 (Q1-2015).
