In the recently published, NIH-sponsored, randomized “Testosterone Trials,” 790 older men (age, ≥65) with testosterone levels lower than 275 ng/dL and specified qualifying symptoms received testosterone gel or placebo for 1 year. In the initial report, testosterone therapy was associated with statistically significant but modest improvement in sexual activity (0.6 points on a 12-point scale) among 470 men whose symptoms were decreased libido plus a low score on a sexual-desire questionnaire (NEJM JW Gen Med Mar 15 2016 and N Engl J Med 2016; 374:611). Now, the researchers provide additional information on sexual outcomes.
