The recent increase in incidence of recurrent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections has led clinicians to recommend various decolonization regimens to patients. However, an optimal approach has not been defined. Given the concern that MRSA can be transmitted between household contacts, researchers undertook a prospective trial in five Pennsylvania academic centers, examining the effect on MRSA carriage of concurrent decolonization of all household members of an index case with acute MRSA skin or soft tissue infection.
