Sepsis, a complication of some infectious diseases, involves generalized organ dysfunction and leads to relatively high mortality. Early diagnosis may be difficult, and prevention of mortality after onset remains problematic. With the goal of prevention, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with the New York State Department of Health, performed a retrospective chart review in four New York City hospitals for the fiscal years 2013 and 2015. Discharge diagnosis of sepsis was based on ICD-9-CM diagnostic coding. Records of 246 adults and 79 children (aged birth to 17 years) were reviewed.
