Social determinants of health have become an important target for intervention in pediatric practices, but effective and affordable methods of screening and intervening are still being determined.
In a randomized trial, researchers screened 1809 parents for social needs while their children were being seen in primary care and urgent care settings. Those with unmet needs were provided either a social resources handout (control group) or consultation with a trained volunteer navigator (intervention group). Navigators helped parents with a wide array of social needs at the index visit and every 2 weeks for up to 3 months.
