Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a known complication of pediatric cardiac surgery; however, the long-term renal consequences of surgery are unknown. In a multicenter prospective cohort study of 131 patents (age range, 1 month to 18 years) who underwent cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, researchers assessed kidney outcomes 5 years after surgery.
Overall, 44% of patients had postoperative AKI. At follow-up, the median serum creatinine estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was not statistically different between patients with and without postoperative AKI.
