The mosquito-borne dengue virus causes significant morbidity and mortality in tropical regions worldwide. Two recent clinical trials found that a live, recombinant, attenuated, three-dose tetravalent vaccine was protective against dengue fever in studies performed both in Asia and Latin America (NEJM JW Infect Dis Sep 2014 and Lancet 2014; 384:1358 and 1327; NEJM JW Infect Dis Dec 2014 and N Engl J Med 2015; 372:113). Because individuals with asymptomatic infection could serve as an important reservoir for the dengue virus, researchers now report on a manufacturer-supported assessment of the vaccine's efficacy against asymptomatic dengue infection, using data from the two clinical trials.
