Emergency departments (EDs) vary in how they follow guideline recommendations to individualize treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). Researchers in Canada conducted a meta-analysis of 16 ED-based studies to assess how well pre-endoscopic risk scores predict serious adverse events 30 days after the UGIB event.
For the Glasgow Blatchford score (GBS), a cutoff score of zero had a sensitivity of 99% and a specificity of 8%; a GBS cutoff score of 2 had 98% sensitivity and 36% specificity (modifications of the GBS were not remarkably different).
