An important discussion with patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) concerns the choice of valve. Bioprosthetic devices are often preferred to mechanical ones because they do not require lifelong anticoagulation therapy; however, data about survival and valve durability in bioprosthetic-valve recipients have been lacking. To address our need for prognostic information, investigators conducted a comprehensive review of observational studies of SAVR with a bioprosthetic valve in 53,884 adults with severe aortic stenosis.
