Acetaminophen toxicity is a common cause of acute liver injury (ALI) and acute liver failure (ALF). Early administration of N-acetylcysteine is effective in reversing acetaminophen overdose, but identifying acetaminophen ingestion as a possible cause of ALF and ALI can be difficult. High-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), a highly complex technique, can be used to measure acetaminophen protein adducts, which are rapidly released into peripheral circulation after large amounts of acetaminophen are ingested.
