A second-generation colon capsule (PillCam), designed to evaluate the entire small bowel and colon, has shown promising results (NEJM JW Gastroenterol Dec 2011 and Gastrointest Endosc 2011; 75:581). Researchers have now studied a version of the capsule with the same hardware but upgraded operational features that enable small-bowel video recording.
Sixty-six patients with known active Crohn disease (CD) and proven bowel luminal patency underwent bowel preparation and video-capsule endoscopy followed by ileocolonoscopy. Active CD lesions were detected by the small-bowel capsules in 83% of patients, by ileocolonoscopy in 70%, and by both methods in 65%.
