Patients often seek referrals from their primary care clinicians for repair of an abdominal wall incisional hernia and sometimes seek counsel about the best approach. Open repair without prosthetic mesh and either open or laparoscopic repair with mesh often are compared with regard to rates of recurrence and long-term complications. In this Danish cohort study, researchers used a national healthcare registry to identify 3242 adults (mean age, 59) who were undergoing first repairs of incisional hernias; most patients underwent mesh repair (either open or laparoscopic). All patients were followed for about 5 years.
