Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a deadly form of stroke with limited treatment options. Trials of surgical treatment via open craniotomy have failed to show demonstrably improved outcomes. To test the effect of aspirating the clot via minimally invasive surgery (MIS), investigators randomized and treated 96 patients to MIS plus alteplase (n=54) or standard medical care (n=42) in a partially industry-funded trial. Using image guidance, a cannula was inserted in the middle two thirds of the hematoma, and the clot was aspirated via a handheld syringe until no fluid remained in the aspirate.
