Like DSM-5's somatic symptom disorders, bodily distress syndrome (BDS) — in the new International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision, for primary care diagnosis — describes medically unexplained symptoms present for at least 6 months. BDS encompasses most previous somatoform disorders, as well as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and irritable bowel syndromes. It is divided into four physical-system patterns (cardiopulmonary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and general) and further divided by severity as multi-organ and single-organ types (symptoms from all 4 groups vs. from 1–3 groups).
