Pilot study data suggest a possible role for aggressive intravenous (IV) fluid resuscitation in preventing post–endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) pancreatitis. Use of lactated Ringer's solution has been shown to be better than normal saline in treatment of acute pancreatitis.
In a randomized, controlled trial from three high-volume ERCP centers in Korea, researchers randomized patients aged 18–75 years to receive vigorous (3 mL/kg/hour) or standard (1.5 mL/kg/hour) IV hydration with lactated Ringer's solution during the procedure and for 8 hours after.
