Some, but not all, studies of screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in older men (age, ≥65) have indicated that screening lowers AAA-related mortality. Previously, researchers in Western Australia reported no significant mortality benefit of AAA screening after 43 months of follow-up. These researchers now report results at 13 years. About 38,000 men (age range, 64–83) were randomized to receive invitations to undergo ultrasonographic screening or to a no-invitation control group. About two thirds of invited men attended. Screening results were sent to patients' primary physicians, who were responsible for subsequent clinical management.
