Influenza vaccination is recommended for children aged 6 months or older. Despite this recommendation and the well-publicized morbidity and mortality of influenza infection, vaccination rates for children hover around 50%–60%. Strategies to improve vaccination rates in adults include administering vaccine outside of healthcare provider offices, such as in pharmacies and places of employment. Vaccinating children in school has previously been shown to be an effective strategy for reducing illness-related absenteeism, but implementation of school-based clinics is challenging (NEJM JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Sep 2014 and Clin Infect Dis 2014; 59:325).
