The utility of intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABPs) for circulatory support in patients with cardiogenic shock has not been observed in clinical trials. Nevertheless, IABP use remains frequent. Another form of circulatory support is Impella CP (maximum output, 3.7 L/minute), a percutaneous ventricular assist device (PVAD). In the randomized IMPRESS trial comparing this device with IABP, Dutch researchers enrolled 48 mechanically ventilated patients (mean age, 58; 79% male) with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and cardiogenic shock being treated with primary percutaneous intervention (PCI).
