Background and Objective

This updated guidance on portal hypertensive bleeding focuses mainly on varices and variceal hemorrhage. Recommendations from an expert panel are based on a literature review and are weighted, with the most weight given to high-quality prospective trials and meta-analyses, less weight to consensus conferences, and the least weight to expert opinion. These recommendations take into account information from multiple randomized trials published and four consensus conferences held since the last guideline update in 2007.
