Candida auris was first identified in 2009 from an external ear infection in Japan, and has since been identified as causing invasive infection with high mortality rates in several geographically dispersed countries including Israel, India, Colombia, Kenya, Pakistan, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. The organism is difficult to identify microbiologically, frequently being misidentified as C. haemulonii or unspecified Candida spp., and is often resistant to several or all three classes of antifungal drugs.
