Studies of computerized cognitive training (CCT) for older individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia have yielded conflicting findings and claims. Investigators conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized, controlled trials in this area, identifying 17 studies enrolling 686 adults with MCI (mean ages, 67–81; 52% female) and 12 enrolling 201 adults with dementia (mean ages, 66–81; 64% female); the included trials variously employed at least 4 hours of drill and practice with clear cognitive aims, videogames, or virtual-reality simulations. Active controls were used in 70% of trials (sham CCT, psychoeducation, paper-and-pencil cognitive training); 30% used passive controls (no contact, wait-lists).
