To determine whether participation in clinical research by treating hospitals improves outcomes for patients, investigators conducted a population-based study of nearly 210,000 patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) in England from 2001 through 2008. Outcomes were linked with data on the percentage of patients at hospitals that participated in intervention trials.
If research participation was ≥16% in a year of diagnosis, patient survival was improved, and postoperative mortality was reduced (P<0.001 for both). The longer the period of hospital research participation, the greater the improvement in patient outcomes. These results were seen in both academic and community hospitals.
