Researchers examined outcomes in patients with malignant colon polyps identified in the Scottish bowel screening program between 2000 and 2012. Of all cancers detected, 15% (in 485 patients) were considered malignant polyps. Of these patients, 186 (38%) underwent surgical segmental resection, and 41 of the 186 (22%) had residual tumor identified. However, the reasons for surgical resection versus endoscopic surveillance were not always clear.
A multivariable analysis demonstrated only that completeness of excision was associated with a reduced risk for residual cancer in the bowel wall.
