The impact of therapy to reduce the risk for breast cancer recurrence in patients with early-stage disease can have several unintended consequences. Systemic adjuvant chemotherapy can be associated with long-term adverse effects, including peripheral neuropathy, irreversible effects on ovarian function (which can translate into an increase in hot flashes), diminished fertility, decreased libido, and dyspareunia.
