Theoretically, the aging of the U.S. population could be associated with an increase in dementia prevalence, but several studies suggest that dementia incidence and prevalence are on the decline (NEJM JW Neurol Apr 2016 and N Engl J Med 2016; 374:523). To explore this issue, researchers used data from a nationally representative prospective survey to identify about 10,500 older adults (age, ≥65; mean age, 75) from each of the survey years 2000 and 2012; about 4000 were in both cohorts. Cognitive function was assessed by a validated questionnaire as part of the telephone-based survey.
