Tenofovir is one of the mainstays of hepatitis B virus (HBV) treatment in both monoinfected and HIV-coinfected patients. In the past year, a new formulation of tenofovir, called tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), has been approved for treatment of HIV as part of several combination therapies. TAF enters cells more efficiently than tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), the previous formulation, so TAF can be given at a smaller dose, resulting in lower plasma tenofovir levels and less toxicity.
