Rising U.S. cesarean delivery rates have triggered a concomitant increase in risk for abnormal placentation and peripartum hysterectomy. Maternal outcomes may be better at centers with higher frequencies of peripartum hysterectomy. Using a nationally representative data source, investigators examined the associations among hospital delivery volumes and hysterectomy volumes with rates of peripartum hysterectomy from 2006 through 2014.
In a cohort of nearly 5.5 million delivery hospitalizations, the overall hysterectomy rate was 89 per 100,000 live births, increasing from 81 to 98 per 100,000 live births during the study period.
