The Disease Transmission Advisory Committee, a voluntary reporting system of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), investigated 14 potential transmission events of suspected donor-derived coccidioidomycosis reported between January 2005 and August 2012.
Five instances of proven transmission and one possible transmission to at least one recipient were found; 21 exposed recipients were identified in total. Of nine transmissions (43% of those exposed), six (67%) resulted in disseminated fungal infection. Five of the six donors were from OPTN Region 5, which includes southwestern U.S. regions that are endemic for coccidioidomycosis.
