Below are this year's NEJM Journal Watch Infectious Diseases most important stories as selected by the editorial board.
As in 2015, major advances in HIV disease are again prominent in the list, with seminal studies showing that antiretroviral therapy prevents HIV transmission and that on-demand preexposure prophylaxis is an alternative in preventing HIV transmission. The second major topic for 2016 was the emergence of the Zika virus and the recognition of the association of the virus with both severe congenital infection and Guillain-Barré syndrome.
