Many published studies have examined specific single-session psychotherapies for children. Now, for a first-ever meta-analysis, investigators conducted a comprehensive literature search and found 50 randomized, controlled trials of this approach (N=10,508; mean ages, 3–19 years). Sessions occurred in clinics, schools, or program settings; included cognitive, behavioral, and motivational approaches; and could have therapeutic or preventive purposes (e.g., for children at high risk).
Single sessions were effective for anxiety and conduct disorders, with moderate effect sizes. The approach was less effective for substance use disorders and ineffective for depressive and eating disorders. Individuals aged <11 had better outcomes than older child…
