Polyethylene glycol plus ascorbate (PEG-ascorbate; MoviPrep, Salix Pharmaceuticals) is an effective low-volume bowel preparation. Some data suggest that an even lower volume of PEG-ascorbate plus bisacodyl is equally effective for bowel cleansing while improving patient tolerability and compliance. To investigate this issue, researchers in Korea randomized 200 patients to receive 2 liters of split-dose PEG-ascorbate or 10 mg bisacodyl given the night before colonoscopy with 1 liter of PEG-ascorbate given the morning of colonoscopy. There was no difference in bowel prep scores on the Boston and Aronchick scales.
