The prevalence of burnout in physicians, as high as 50% in some studies, prompted researchers to perform a meta-analysis of 19 randomized trials that tested interventions to prevent physician burnout. Both primary care and specialty physicians (total participants, 1550, including residents) participated in interventions directed toward physicians, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (12 studies), or interventions directed toward organizations, such as reducing workloads and enhancing teamwork and communication skills (7 studies). Follow-up ranged from 2 weeks to 1 year.
