Women with diabetes require focused contraceptive counseling, as unplanned pregnancy in such women is associated with excess risk for adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Investigators probed a U.S. health claims database from 2002 to 2011 to examine the relation between hormonal contraception and thromboembolism (TE; venous thrombosis, stroke, and myocardial infarction) in some 146,000 women (age range, 14–44) with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Highly prevalent comorbidities included hypertension (35%), obesity (34%), and hyperlipidemia (26%). Adjusted analysis was performed to control for age, smoking, hypertension, obesity, hyperlipidemia, diabetic complications, and history of cancer.
