Investigators have reported the final results of an open-label, cluster-randomized, ring-vaccination trial using a recombinant, replication-competent, vesicular stomatitis virus–based candidate vaccine (rVSV-ZEBOV) that expresses a surface glycoprotein of Zaire Ebola virus. The trial was conducted during the Ebola epidemic. Clusters of contacts of Ebola cases were identified and randomly assigned to immediate vaccination or delayed vaccination (21 days later) with a single intramuscular dose of rVSV-ZEBOV. Other clusters of contacts were not randomized but were offered vaccination.
