Hypertension remains a dominant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, and others, around the world. To provide further insight to the global nature of elevated blood pressure, investigators brought together data from 844 population-based studies in 154 countries from 1990 to 2015. They specifically sought to assess the burden of hypertension to various causes of death and disability over time.
Among the key findings was that the number of people with systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 140 mm Hg or higher was estimated to have increased from 442 million in 1990 to 874 million in 2015, when this SBP level was responsible for 14% of total deaths and 143 million disability-associated life-years.
