A prior study showed that 1-year outcomes for adolescents following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (mean age at surgery, 17 years) for extreme obesity were quite promising (NEJM JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Jan 2014 and JAMA Pediatr 2014; 168:47). Investigators now report outcomes a mean of 8 years after surgery for 57 of 74 patients from the original cohort (mean age now, 25 years).
Key findings were:
Mean body-mass index (BMI) was 58.5 kg/m2 at baseline, 36.3 at 1 year, and 41.7 at 8 years; 87% of patients had at least a 10% reduction in BMI, but 63% still had a BMI >35.
Prevalence of diabetes dropped from 16% to 2%, dyslipidemia from 85% to 38%, and hypertension from 47% to 16%.
