To examine the effects of epilepsy diagnosis and prior status epilepticus (SE) events on timely treatment of refractory status epilepticus (rSE), researchers conducted a prospective observational study among pediatric patients treated in U.S. hospitals for rSE during a 5-year period. Of the 189 participants, 89 had histories of epilepsy and 34 had prior diagnoses of SE. Patients with prior SE received their first benzodiazepine earlier than those without such history. Differences were driven by seizures that began outside the hospital. Participants with epilepsy received their first nonbenzodiazepine antiepileptic drug later and were less likely to receive at least one continuous infusion than those without epilepsy.
