Links between schizophrenia and diabetes date to the 19th century, before antipsychotic medications were available and diabetogenic diets were common. To examine the prevalence of dysregulated glucose metabolism in patients with early or prodromal schizophrenia spectrum disorders, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 16 case-control studies involving 731 patients and 614 controls. Patients either never received antipsychotics or took them for ≤2 weeks.
