The increased survival of HIV+ patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART) results in an increasing burden of diseases seen in older persons, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes mellitus (DM). Because of uncertainty about whether HIV increases the risk for DM independent of other risk factors, investigators compared the weighted prevalence of DM in a population of 8610 HIV+ adults from the Medical Monitoring Project and 5604 HIV-negative adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2009 and 2010.
