Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) function by heating nicotine-containing solvents to produce an inhaled aerosol. Early data demonstrate lower levels of carcinogens in e-cigarettes than in combustible cigarettes. To look at the safety of long-term use of e-cigarettes, researchers in London conducted this cross-sectional study to compare nicotine levels and tobacco-related carcinogens and toxins among five groups (≈36 people/group):
Current combustible-cigarette users (≥5 cigarettes daily for ≥6 months)
Current concomitant combustible-cigarette and e-cigarette users
Current concomitant combustible-cigarette and nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT) users
