More Evidence Supporting Ovarian Conservation at Hysterectomy for Benign Indications

U.K. findings confirm that keeping at least one ovary is good for health and longevity.

Despite U.S. reports suggesting higher mortality when bilateral oophorectomy (BO) is performed at the time of hysterectomy (NEJM JW Womens Health May 2013 and Obstet Gynecol 2013; 121:709), many women still undergo BO. To further evaluate the associations between ovarian conservation and health outcomes, U.K. investigators performed a nationwide retrospective study of some 114,000 women (age range, 35–45; median age, 42) without histories of breast or gynecologic cancer who underwent hysterectomy with ovarian conservation (67%) or BO (33%) between 2004 and 2014.
