Results of studies of acupuncture for various pain conditions — including migraine — have been mixed. In this study from China, researchers randomized 249 patients (mean age, 38; mostly women) who had migraine without aura to true acupuncture, sham acupuncture, or a wait-list control group. Patients in the true and sham acupuncture groups received 20 acupuncture treatments (each lasting 30 minutes) during 4 weeks and were followed for an additional 20 weeks. True acupuncture used acupuncture points thought to be effective for migraine, based on a systematic review of ancient and modern literature, and on expert opinion and was delivered in a way that induced a specific sensation of soreness, numbness, or radiation known as Deqi.
